About Byron Bay
Byron Bay is very proud of its beautiful environment. It values and protects its beaches, wetlands, forests and the rare birds and animals that are part of the landscape. People flock to the region to see the migrating humpback whales, dolphins and sharks. Julian Rocks, is among the top ten dive sights in Australia and tours operate there daily. Byron Bay also hosts the usual Australian wildlife of kangaroos, koalas, snakes, and birdlife.
The town is known for an appreciation of entertainment and the arts. Many markets in the area contribute to a lively arts and crafts scene. The people of Byron lead an active lifestyle with bicycle trails and bushwalks everywhere. The Gold Coast and Byron Bay offer some of the best surfing on the east coast of Australia. The Gold Coast also provides access to Australia's largest and most exciting amusement parks. Dreamworld, Wet n Wild, Movieworld, and Sea World are fun filled days for the whole family about an hour's drive from Byron Bay.
Byron itself hosts many surfing spots such as, Wategos Bay, The Pass, The Wreck, Tallows Beach, and Cosy Corner with world class spots Lennox Heads, and Tweed Heads nearby. The region abounds with quality art, food, health and entertainment. From April 5 - 9 the area is alive with blues music during the Bluesfest East Coast Blues and Roots Festival. The festival attracts many tourists as well as big name bands such as, Ben Harper, Dave Matthews band, John Mayer and Taj Mahal to name a few.
The Byron shire also features towns and villages with great historical significance. The NSW north coast is the traditional territory of the Bunjalung people. Europeans discovered Cape Byron in May 1770. The Byron Bay lighthouse is the most easterly point in Australia and is 800 km from Sydney and 175 km from Brisbane. Byron Bay is easily accessed by the north from Surfer's Paradise or the south from Sydney. The smaller inland town of Nimbin is teeming with hippies and marijuana and is an easy day trip from Byron. Flights go to Lismore, Coolangatta and Ballina which are close to Byron and both Virgin Blue and Jetstar operate internal flights. One thing is for sure, there is so much to do that you won't know what to do next in Byron Bay.
